Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy
What is Phoenix Rising? Founder Michael Lee rightly describes it as a “bridge from body to soul.” Phoenix Rising is a unique form of body/mind therapy that combines ancient yoga postures with contemporary psychology. Through the guidance of an experienced practitioner, clients are assisted through a series of interwoven postures while dialoguing about the physical, emotional and/or spiritual experience they are having. My job is to provide a safe space for my clients so that they can deeply explore what is happening within the body.
Each individual session lasts approximately 90-minutes and is carefully designed to fit the client’s needs. Postures are selected with regard to what each person is feeling, thinking, or what they wish to explore further. Following the posture sequence, each session closes with an integration period, or a reflection on what the receiver learned from his/her body, and how that insight plays a role in their life. Every session includes non-directive dialogue that helps the receiver find their own focus and clarity surrounding the issues and questions they are exploring. My role as practitioner is not to tell the receiver what to do or how to do it, but to simply be witness to their journey. Having a quiet, yet active presence enables us to be open to the knowledge the body inherently possesses. In this way, the practitioner can support the client not only through a physical challenge, but an emotional one as well.
Phoenix Rising practitioners use a term called the “edge.” The edge is a place of deeper exploration. It is a place where we feel physically challenged, that is, our body is stretching as deeply as it can. When we are at this physical edge, the opportunity to explore the sensations and emotions that come with it arises. We may have experienced being at the edge before, but usually most of us will run from it because it can be uncomfortable. However, in a yoga therapy session, we have the physical support we need to stay in the pose, and stay at our edge. A practitioner’s gentle questions and guidance can help open the door to new insights and discoveries. When we feel safe, we are better able to let go and surrender to our emotions, rather than running from them. We can stay and be present to whatever comes up. We are able to explore fears, memories, traumas and joys that have been stored in the body. Sometimes these feelings and emotions need to be released so that we can move forward in a positive way, living from a more authentic place of being. Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy gives us tools for which to do that.
When we find that we can use our body as a tool for insight, guidance and growth, we can truly embrace life and all of its fears and joys. We come into a place of balance and harmony in mind, body and spirit. Or as the definition of the word yoga suggests, we are in a state of union.
